Sayed Pervez - He was accused of blasphemy after he downloaded a report from a Farsi website which stated that Muslim fundamentalists who claimed the Koran justified the oppression of women had misrepresented the views of the prophet Mohamed.

Mr Kambaksh, 23, distributed the tract to fellow students and teachers at Balkh University with the aim, he said, of provoking a debate on the matter. But a complaint was made against him and he was arrested, tried by religious judges without - say his friends and family - being allowed legal representation and sentenced to death.

“As a culture, Americans first must take the step in acknowledging that violence against women is not a women’s issue, but a men’s issue. This is the foundation strategy for engaging young men and boys in gender violence prevention. The first problem I have with labeling gender issues as women’s issues is that it gives men an excuse to not pay attention. This is also the problem with calling them gender issues, because the majority of the people in the status quo see gender issues as women’s issues.

It is estimated that 18 million women, children, and men have been sexually abused in the U.S. Think about all the men who love these people and have been personally and profoundly affected by knowing that their loved ones have been a victim of sexual violence. So don’t tell me these are not men’s issues.

I come from a social justice perspective that if you are a member of the dominant group and you don’t speak up in the face of others in your group when they are abusive, your silence is a form of consent and complicity.”

Nicholas Kristof, reports on issues such as rape or human trafficking while traveling around countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. He brings the personal stories of women from these regions to the mainstream American media and he smartly uses new media to do so. Kristof even demonstrates how to report safely on a global crisis. In his capacity as a journalist, he also warmly embraces the role of the teacher. Being a white male role model is important today in American society where a vast majority of the male public still require further education on the equitable status of women.

Additionally, him being both white and very popular could serve as a more familiar example to the mostly all white male leadership that currently dominates the mainstream and middlestream media.

Krisotf is someone to be followed and reached out to as an ally.

Jonathan McIntosh remixes a video to portray the patriarchal tendencies of Hollywood using the characters Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Edward Cullen from Twilight.

In his guest blog on WIMN’s site he talks about the reaction he’s seen in the comments section of the video, reactions of empowerment from little girls - to not only see a strong female kicking butt but to also expose the abusive and stalking behaviors of Cullen, the teen heartthrob.

Bravo to Mr. McIntosh for being a male voice of reason thrown into the fray to counter balance the immense popularity of a teen sensation. Bravo!

Having been involved with Men Can Stop Rape since its beginning in 1997, Pat coordinates the annual Men of Strength Awards, the gala around which DC area men and women rally in support of men preventing gender-based violence and valuing alternative visions of male strength. He oversees licensing for Strength Mediaworks, MCSR’s groundbreaking media initiative, widely recognized as the nation’s best-designed and most effective public service advertising sexual-assault-prevention outreach to young men. He created Safe and Strong, which has been described as a “great, up-to-the-minute online newsletter filled with interesting articles and reviews on how men are engaged in ending violence.” His responsibilities also include overseeing the content of MCSR’s award-winning website, handling media outreach and response, participating in several coalitions and networks, conducting informative workshops, and generally marketing MCSR to the public. He has conducted hundreds of workshops and trainings in Washington, DC and across the country. Dr. McGann’s Ph.D., from the University of Illinois at Chicago, is in Language, Literacy, and Rhetoric, and his dissertation focuses on the connections between male socialization and academic discourse.
